As part of efforts to help mitigate the spread of coronavirus and fight the COVID-19, the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has donated personal protective equipments (PPEs) and medical supplies that worth N15million to the Lagos State Government.
Speaking in Lagos on Monday during the handover of the medical equipments to the General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, the Managing Director of WAPCo Limited, Mr. Gregory Germani, represented by General Manager, Operations, WAPCO, Mr. Saminu Justin, commended the Lagos State Government for its leadership role in containing the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria.
According to him, “I commend you for the leadership you have provided since the onset of the COVID-19 global pandemic. Your steadfast commitment to doing it right in Lagos state has given direction and even hope to other locations even outside Nigeria.
“As nations and states make efforts to stop the spread of these deadly virus, WAPCO sees Lagos state has being pivotal in providing the needed solutions for the Nigerian people, and we are readily aligned with efforts in this regards. We as a responsible organization consider ourselves as partners with the state government especially in times of such monumental crisis.
“To show our commitment to this ideal, the WAPCO is hereby donating personal protective equipments and other medical supplies worth over N15million to the Lagos State government. We are hopeful that this model donations will help give our frontline workers the opportunity to offer their services in a much safer way. We look forward to brighter times when the COVID-19 is contained and our dear is back on track.”
Receiving the donated items on behalf of Lagos State Government, Dr. Dolapo Fawase, thanked the management of West African Gas Pipeline Company for not only being aware of the situation but “joining us in fighting the disease. They have joined us actively and not passively.
“They have given us personal protective equipment that are useful on the hospitals, thermometers that would protect us and the people coming to us. We are seeing all over the world that medical personnel are being exposed due to lack of adequate PPEs.
“What these medical donations have done is that it is telling medical personnel that some people appreciate what you do and they are looking out for you. These items are very important for medical personnel and those of us that are first responders. This is very commendable and we look forward to a mutually beneficially relationship.”
In addition to supporting governments to fight the pandemic, WAPCo has a community relations policy within its areas of operation aimed at establishing proactive partnerships that will foster healthy, long term relationship with host communities.
WAPCo’s objectives for this partnership are to cultivate and sustain, trusting and harmonious relationships as well as mutually beneficial social partnership with local communities; to foster good neighborliness and ensure community goodwill and support for successful project implementation and operations; to maintain open, honest and constructive dialogue with all stakeholder groups and facilitate actions to manage their legitimate concerns and issues and to implement a sustainable Community Development Programme that will have positive impact on the living standards of people in the project affected communities.
In furtherance of these objectives, WAPCo in partnership with host communities, through a Participatory Needs Assessment study, identified high impact programmes that address basic needs and economic development in these communities.
WAPCo is a limited liability company that owns and operates the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP). The company has its headquarters in Accra, Ghana, with an office in Badagry, Nigeria, and field offices in Cotonou – Benin, Lome – Togo, Tema and Takoradi, both in Ghana. WAPCo is a joint venture between public and private sector companies from Nigeria, Benin, Togo and Ghana.
The company’s main mandate is to transport natural gas from Nigeria to customers in Benin, Togo and Ghana in a safe, responsible and reliable manner, at prices competitive with other fuel alternatives.
WAPCo is owned by Chevron West African Gas Pipeline Ltd (36.9%); Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (24.9%); Shell Overseas Holdings Limited (17.9%); and Takoradi Power Company Limited (16.3%), Societe Togolaise de Gaz (2%) and Societe BenGaz S.A. (2%). The West African Gas Pipeline Authority based in Abuja is the regulatory body for WAPCo.
